Paper Abstract:      This experiment examined children’s aesthetic preferences for e-books designed for them. It applied Berlyne’s theory of aesthetic preference to these e-books: a theory which suggests that people prefer a medium level of stimuli to a low or high level of stimuli. The experiment used a 3 x 2 between-subjects experimental design. The variables were visual complexity and gender. A total of 60 children aged between 10 and 13 years old were involved. In the experiment the children were asked to rate 3 e-books with different levels of visual complexity for their aesthetic preference. The results showed that the children preferred the e-book that displayed a medium level of visual complexity, thus the results supported Berlyne’s theory. However, when the results were analysed by gender, it was found that the boys preferred the e-book with a high level of visual complexity while the girls preferred the e-book with a medium level of visual complexity.
